Soul seeds - What is taking root in your mind?

Have you ever found yourself singing a song without thinking about the meaning of the words? I have to admit that I've become a bit of a 'nag' when it comes to my daughter singing songs that are totally against what we believe or is opposite to what the Word says.

I learnt a long time ago, that our words have power and we need to be so wise against the schemes of the enemy when singing along to what might be seen as a 'harmless tune'. Actually, whether we're singing or speaking it, those words have the ability to impact our souls in ways that we could never imagine.

What is your soul?

Your soul can be defined as your: Mind, Will, Emotions & Intellect.

In fact, it's everything that we need to work so hard on to keep in line with our spirit who is our link to the Holy Spirit.

If a song can bring you to tears, or put you in a good mood, or make you think of someone special, it's impacting your soul.

My daughter recently celebrated her birthday with a silent disco. She asked her friends to create a playlist so that everyone could enjoy some of their favourite songs too. To say I was a bit shocked at some of the words, is an understatement. Needless to say we skipped those songs!

The devil has a way of subtly desensitising us to things that we would normally find unacceptable, and will bring us to a point where it becomes something we're really not too worried about. It becomes okay for our young kids to sing songs with sexual content when we think 'it's just a song'. When those words start plaguing their minds at night, during the day at school, and they start to act out in ways that is contrary to their character, you might wonder where it's all coming from.

I was driving to town the other day and happened to have the radio on. An old song by the singer, Meatloaf, came on. I was never a fan of his music (and still am not), but I've heard the song enough times to hum along to the tune. I was just mindlessly driving and was not really paying much attention to the words, until it got to the lyrics:  'Some days I pray for Silence, Some days I pray for Soul,

Some days I just pray to the God of Sex and Drums and Rock 'N' Roll.'

Instantly it felt like the Holy Spirit woke me up. How did I ever miss that? How did I never pay attention to the words? I immediately stopped humming and switched off the radio and prayed that God would protect my heart and my soul against the effects of those words.

I had to Google it to be sure that I heard it correctly! For someone like me who is super-sensitive to these things, I was surprised that I had never noticed it before. I have to give myself some grace because I don't go out looking for his music or anything similar - it just happened to be on the radio.

The lyrics of that song is a bit in your face, but there are many songs today that are overly sexual, very crude, violent and so incredibly deceiving.

A more recent song called "Only love can hurt like this" is another song that the Holy Spirit brought my attention to - again while driving. When we understand that 'God is Love' and not just a mere feeling, then we will understand that the words of that song is completely contrary to the Word. You may argue that I am taking it way too far, it's just a song afterall... but when you look at all of this in light of your own eternity, then hopefully you'll think about it again.

The tunes are often so catchy that young kids and adults alike can't resist singing along but yet these words can impact our souls so deeply - maybe not today, but in the future, when you've heard it enough times and you've piled it up with the lyrics of other songs, it may one day grow into something that you never planned for or ever expected.

A seed does not flower the moment it hits the ground. It takes time to take root, then over time, slowly grows. With enough water and sunlight, it will flourish until full-grown. Have you ever stopped to think, what seeds are being planted in your soul?

It's time for us to wake up to the reality of the devils schemes. Don't let things as simple as songs impact your life and those of your children in a way that may have a detrimental effect on them one day. When we listen to that still small prompting of the Holy Spirit, He will guide you into all truth and protect your soul from all the devil's devices.

When there are many words, wrongdoing is unavoidable, But one who restrains his lips is wise. (NASB)

1 Corinthians 1:18

For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. (NIV)

Colossians 2:2-3

My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. (NIV)
